How to Read IP Filing and Market Trends
Filing counts are indicators of activity—not direct measures of innovation quality, enforceable scope, portfolio value, or commercial success.

Start with the dataset
Check whether figures cover applications, grants, registrations, classes, designs, resident or non-resident filings, international applications, designated countries, or active rights. Definitions and reporting periods matter.
Normalize before comparing
Country size, classification, multi-class practice, office backlogs, divisional filings, regional systems, and applicant behaviour can distort simple rankings. Compare like with like and retain the source methodology.
Translate trends into decisions carefully
A growing field may justify deeper prior-art, clearance, landscape, or freedom-to-operate work. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular filing, acquisition, or enforcement action is worthwhile.
