GI protection is collective and origin-linked

A geographical indication identifies qualifying goods whose quality, reputation, or other characteristic is essentially attributable to geographic origin; it is not an ordinary private brand registration.

General educational information only. Applicable law, office practice, deadlines, evidence, fees, and available remedies depend on the facts and jurisdiction. Confirm current requirements before acting.

Applications ordinarily require an eligible association, organisation, or authority representing producers, together with a statement of case, geographic map, production standards, and inspection structure.
Producers may seek authorised-user status for a registered GI. Registration in India is valid for 10 years and can be renewed for further 10-year periods.
International protection is country- and treaty-specific; an Indian registration does not automatically create an enforceable right in every export market.
